Logging an expense takes one line

The quick-add box parses a whole transaction from plain text, so the common case never opens a form. Type the amount, a title, an account and a category and press enter.

Every amount is an exact decimal

Money is stored as NUMERIC(19,4) in Postgres and handled with big.js in the browser. There is no floating-point arithmetic anywhere in the money path, which is why a long list of small transactions still adds up to the number you would get on paper.

A daily and a monthly expense tracker in one ledger

History groups by day with income and expense totals for each day, so the daily expense tracker view is the one you get by default. Change the period to a month and the same rows become a monthly expense tracker: income, expenses and the balance for that month, with category totals underneath. Income is a positive entry in the same ledger rather than a separate document, which is what makes it an income and expense tracker without a second screen to keep in sync.

A self employed expense tracker without a second app

Freelancers and sole traders use the same ledger as everyone else, with the business kept separate by account and tag rather than by a second subscription. Tag a deductible purchase as you log it, then filter a whole tax year by that tag and export the result to CSV, XLSX or PDF for an accountant. Scoping a budget to the business account keeps a personal coffee habit out of figures a P&L depends on.

An expense tracker website, not an app-store listing

Chillar's is a personal expense tracker you open in a browser. There is nothing to download and no app-store account to create. On a phone you can add it to the home screen and it runs full-screen like an installed app, because it is a progressive web app - but installing is optional. The same account opens on a laptop and a phone with the same data, which is the part a device-locked app cannot do.

The history is grouped the way you think about it

Transactions are grouped by day with income and expense totals per day, and the whole ledger is virtualized, so ten thousand rows scroll at the speed of ten. Filters for type, account, category, amount range, keywords and tags all live in the URL, so a view you built is a link you can send.

A dropped connection does not stop you

Chillar's needs the internet to sign in and to sync, but not to keep working once it is open. It installs as a progressive web app, pages you have visited render from cache when the network is gone, and a transaction you log with no signal waits in the browser until you reconnect. Each one carries a client-generated id, so a retry can never double it.
